Instructions

Step 1
Heat water in a deep saucepot, over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup of washed masoor daal, a pinch of turmeric and salt. Boil until the water completely evaporates and the daal has cooked through and softens. Stir occasionally to prevent the daal from burning at the bottom of the pan.
Step 2
Once cooked, remove onto a bowl and set aside to cool down.
Step 3
Roast dry red chilli on a heated pan, cook for 2-3 minutes, until they are slightly burnt on all sides. Stir continuously as they can get burnt really fast.
Step 4
Remove them onto a plate and allow it to cool down.
Step 5
Adjust the heat and other ingredients as needed per taste. We like our bhortas extra spicy so we added a little more green chilli!
Step 6
Mash roasted dry red chilli with pinch of salt, followed by chopped green chilli and thinly sliced onions. Add mustard oil and mix all ingredients well. Add coriander leaves, boiled masoor daal, continue to mash until everything is thoroughly mixed.
Step 7
To make bhorta, use a flat plate. Mash the ingredients by hand, start by taking small quantities and add more as you continue.
Step 8
Serve bhorta alongside hot plain white rice. Enjoy!
