Instructions
Step 1
Coarsely grate the onion and add to a small bowl.

Step 2
Drain the beans and transfer to the bowl. Add chili powder, salt, and pepper to the beans and onion; stir until mixture is combined.

Step 3
Use a potato masher or fork to mash bean mixture until the beans are mostly broken up.

Step 4
Add the bread crumbs; stir until the mixture is combined.

Step 5
Heat a skillet over medium heat.

Step 6
Form the bean mixture into two patties.
Step 7
Add olive oil to the skillet and swirl to coat the bottom.

Step 8
Place the patties in the skillet and cook until they are browned and heated through on both sides. Once done, transfer to a plate.

Step 9
Toast the buns if desired.

Step 10
Halve and pit the avocado; medium dice the flesh while it's still in the skin, then scoop out into a small bowl.

Step 11
Add juice of lime to the avocado and season with salt and pepper; mash with a fork until smooth.

Step 12
Halve the grape tomatoes.

Step 13
Place the bun halves on two plates, top with the black bean patties, and add dollops of the avocado spread. Arrange the greens on the side, top with the grape tomatoes, and drizzle with olive oil and the remaining lime.
