Step 1
In a medium pot, saute onion in oil over medium heat until translucent. Add fennel and cook a few minutes more.
Step 2
Add canned tomatoes, herbs and orange zest. Bring to a boil, then simmer until tomatoes have lost their sharpness, about 20 minutes.
Step 3
Working in batches, blend soup until fairly smooth, then transfer back to pot. Stir in orange juice and kale. If serving immediately, bring back up to a simmer; if not, residual heat will probably be sufficient to cook the kale.
