Instructions

Step 1
Wash the dal in water until water runs clear, then drain place in a deep saucepan and cover with 1.5 litres of water. Bring to the boil, turn down the heat and simmer for an hour.
Step 2
Meanwhile heat the rapeseed oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the cumin seeds and shallots. Cook for about 5 mins, then add garlic and chilli and cook for five more mins before adding the turmeric and garam masala.
Step 3
Top into the dal and stir, then add the salt. You might need some extra hot water to thin out the dal.
