Step 1
Fry onion, garlic, and spices in oil until golden brown

Add lentils, water (or broth), and salt

Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until lentils are tender, about 45 min. Remove cover and simmer on very low heat, stirring frequently, about 20 more minutes, until lentils are mushy and thick, about the consistency of refried beans.
